The nature of the first simulation tests of Shanghai is to simulate the SHMET as much as possible. Thus, the reference value of the simulation tests is of vital importance. After reading through main domestic studies of cloze tests, the research has found out the fact that the studies of deletion methods of cloze tests can be separated into two parts. The first is the effect of different deletion methods. The second is the influence of different deletion methods on the difficulty of cloze tests. In this sense, the previous studies on the deletion methods of simulation tests are rare and the present studies attempt to regard the SHEMT as a standard test and tries to find out the reference value of cloze tests in simulation tests from the deletion methods.The direct purpose of this research is to make the deletion methods of cloze tests in SHMET clear and compare them with simulation tests in order to find out the reference value of the latter. The study is divided into five parts. The first part is introduction and the second is literature review. In the second part, the definition of cloze test, the types, the theoretical basis and the relevant studies at home and abroad will be discussed. The third chapter is research methodology. This chapter illustrates the research method and procedures. The detailed analysis will be presented in the fourth part. The whole research tries to find out several shortcomings of the simulation tests. First, reiteration and collocation are common in SHMET which are rare in the simulation tests. Second, the simulation tests are poorly designed in the distribution of content words and functional words. Last, the simulation tests are performed badly in testing point focus which is important in SHMET. Apart from comparison, there are another two steps to make the reference value more clearly. One step is interviewing with senior high school teachers who are familiar with simulation tests and SHMET. The other step is fixing three simulation tests and measuring their reference value again. In this stage, senior high school students are invited to do the tests and then their scores will be analyzed and the implications of the scores will be discussed. The last chapter is about the suggestions and limitation of the study.
