New English Curriculum Standards makes it clear that the teaching resources in television, audio media, books and newspapers, magazines and on the Internet should be made full use of to expand the approaches of learning and using English. Reading is the most important approach of getting information and inputting the target language. Moreover, English newspapers can offer students the latest information and the idiomatic language. English newspaper reading can connect students’ real lives to their English learning, make up for the shortages of the textbooks and help students to improve their reading comprehension abilities.With the guidance of New English Curriculum Standards, according to the real situation of English reading teaching in junior middle schools, an empirical study on the application of English newspaper is carried out in junior middle school English reading. Based on the theory of Input Hypothesis, Schema theory, TBLT, reading strategy and other related research results, this empirical study is done in Sa Laqi Number 4 Middle School. The hypothesis of the study is: the English newspaper---English Weekly ·Junior Edition reading(reading part) helps to improve the students’ reading ability. This thesis focuses on the studies of the following three issues:(1) what is the current situation of junior students’ using English Newspaper in English reading?(2) what is the problem in using EnglishNewspaper of junior students?(3) can using English newspaper English Weekly(reading comprehension) help to improve students’ reading ability in English learning? Firstly, questionnaires are sent out among the students in class one and class two of the grade two in Sa Laqi Number 4 Middle School.And then the data of the questionnaires will be collected and analyzed.Secondly, the empirical study will be carried out within 16 weeks based on the results from the questionnaire in the two classes. Finally, the results of the empirical study will be analyzed and some suggestions for the English newspaper reading teaching will be put forward.Through the empirical study, a conclusion is came up with that the teaching of English newspaper and making full use of the English newspaper contributes to the development of students’ reading interests and reading abilities, so that promoting the English teaching effects.This thesis is divided into five chapters: Chapter one is the introduction part which presents the background information of the study, the purpose and the significance of the research and the organization of the thesis;Chapter two is the literature review part. The definition of reading, reading ability, strategies for reading comprehension and principles of teaching reading are introduced. Furthermore, the related theories to the experimental study are presented. It consists of Input Hypothesis theory, the theory of Schema and the theory of TBLT. And the studies on English newspaper reading abroad and at home have also been reviewed; Chapter three ismethodology part which is a description of the empirical study. It consists of research questions and hypotheses, subjects, training materials, instruments and procedures; Chapter four is the collection and analysis part of the data, it focus on analyzing the data of the pre-test, the post-test and the questionnaire. The results of the questionnaire are analyzed from different perspectives in detail. It aims at making quantitative analysis to testify the research hypothesis; Chapter five is the conclusion part, which consists of major findings of the research, implications, limitations and some suggestions for newspaper reading teaching in junior middle schools.
