In the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship for Men held in Philippines, Chinese Men Basketball Team ranked in fifth position which was the worst result we had ever gained in Asia Championship. Chinese basketball team has lost the qualification of The 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. This performance is a hard blow for the basketball industry of China and basketball fans. In recent years, with the development of basketball industry, CBA has become the most professional and popular league match in Asia. Basketball possesses wide markets in the cities who own a CBA team. It can be concluded that the basketball industry in China is well-developed. However, the ranking in Asia Champion did not reflect the real capacity of China Men basketball players, who are more athletic and more rigorously trained. In order to analyze the reasons of failure, many experts from sports research institution and basketball players and coaches have written large amount of articles to find the mistakes which happened in the course. By means of literature review, expert interview, video observation analysis, mathematical statistic, logic analysis and other methods, this article, focused on rebounds, aims at finding the gap between China and other competitive countries and finding proper ways to solve these problems from some tough games. It is extremely important for China Basket team and every team in league to avoid these problems abstractly and practically, if they want to pursue more excellent result.Statistics and video replays show that there are four main reasons related to rebounds causing the failure in the face of rivals.:Firstly, our rebounds are overly dependent on the natural advantages, such as our players’ height and weight. Although Chinese players are commonly higher and stronger than any other Asian countries, other teams can still grab many rebounds especially offensive rebounds depending on the enthusiasm for rebounds and endless movement. For example, in some clutch games, such as with Korea and China-Taipei, whose players are smaller than us, these teams’ rebounds are even higher than us.Secondly, the efficiency of second chance points is low. For instance, in the quarter final, China get 11 offensive rebounds and have 5 second chances, while Taipei get 8 offensive rebounds and change 6 into second chances.Thirdly, after rebounding, China cannot construct attacks immediately; therefore they lose the chance to score by an easy slam dunk, lay-up or three points. Normally, whoever get the rebound, Chinese players always stay for a second, then pass the ball to guards and let them dribble half-court slowly. Unfortunately, this process kills so much time that all the defenders are in the right position. To illustrate this point, people can review the quarter final with Taipei. In this game, the number of China quick attack points is 10 less than Taipei. Finally, China frontcourt players are not aggressive enough to get fouled. It is known that Chinese players have advantages competing with rivals. However, if China players, especially centre and power forward, cannot attack the hoop constantly and make competitors foul, the rivals may put the bigger players on the court to harass and defend Chinese players and consume Chinese players’ energy until exhaustion, and this may eliminate Chinese players’ height advantage. To sum up, if Chinese basketball team wants to return to the prime in Asia, some changes must be placed to overcome these flaws. The development of Asian basketball is fast and a lot of countries are becoming more and more skillful and powerful, so China need to change minds and learn from other competitive teams to enhance the consciousness of rebounds, protect rebounds by teamwork, and improve the success rates of second chance point and quick attack. If Chinese team can solve these problems, they may control the game in their own style, beat other teams and come back to the prime.
