Although tennis is continually developing in speed and breadth in China, the development rate in recent years is even less than that in the past, especially in college sports, a representation of popular sports, the number of participants in college tennis appears negative growth. The main idea of this article is the limitations concerning the development of tennis in the universities within Wuhan and the solutions regarding these limitations. In order to gain a further understanding of the tennis programs’ development in 13non-athletically oriented universities in Wuhan, the author has referred to many related documents, interviewed experts in the subject, conducted surveys and processed the data. After acquiring the sufficient information and objective data about the subject, it appears that the seven main reasons below are the major obstacles to the development of tennis practicing in the universities of Wuhan:1. Compared to other sports, tennis is not familiar to the majority of university students, which is a major disadvantage. Therefore, as students lack enthusiasm for tennis, university campuses would not have the potential to develop a tennis environment.2. University campuses are devoid of tennis courts. In addition, the tennis courts that are constructed in the campuses contain plenty of problems regrading their standardization. For example, on some campuses, there are no fences, awnings or rest areas in the tennis courts; also, the fences of the tennis courts, on other campuses, are too close to the court. All these conditions lead to the underdevelopment of tennis in these campuses.3. The universities are only willing to provide students taking tennis courses cheap and unqualified equipments for the sport, a fact which lessens the students interest in tennis.4. The tennis courses offered by the universities do not have organized schedules or practical orientations. Furthermore, the coaches for the courses are not capable of treating students individually according to their fitness level.5. As the universities do not provide their tennis coaches any opportunities to communicate with other tennis coaches, the course or programs led by the tennis coaches would lack chances of promotion.6. The tennis clubs organized in the universities ought to value not only thenumber of members joining the club, but also the variations of activities organized in the clubs.7. Except the Hubei province university championships and the competition organized by the tennis association of Wuhan universities, there are no other tennis competitions offered to the university students in Wuhan; this situation indeed seems incongruous with the well-developed Wuhan amateur championships. University students should be the ones leading the development and spirit of tennis.
