Sailing is an Olympic game combining human and nature perfectly. The athlete drives the sailboat forward by adjusting the sail’s angle and controling the sailboat’s attitude suitably according to the change of wind and current.Generally, the environment around the competive areas is complex and changeable. Multiple sailing technical parameters including the course, attitude, sail’s angle relative to the wind, and so on, directly reflect the athlete’s strain capacity and operation skills. These parameters are closely related to the sailing’s performace and are key factors to winning a competition. There is a strong demand on quantification of these technical parameters in sailing training. Therefore, implementing a real-time monitoring system to measure them and building a scientific training mode based on them are feasible and effective ways of improving the athletes’performace fastly.A sailing multi-parameters real-time monitoring system is designed and implemented in this paper based on wireless sensor network and 3G mobile communication technologies, which can monitor multiple technical parameters of multiple athletes during the sailing synchronously. In detail, these parameters include GPS position, speed, course, attitude, wind speed, wind direction, rope tension, heart rate and so on.Firstly, this paper proposes the system’s architecture and analyses the specific functions about every device. According to WSN’s design principals and application characteristics, it provides a detailed design scheme and a list of relative technologies.Secondly, this paper hightlights a special method of data fusion based on Kalman filter in the attitude measurement node. It raises the attitude measurement precision. Aimning at solving the problem caused by the data packets’random arrival, this paper attempts to use queuing theory to predict the system’s network performance and get some design values by striking a balance between average latency and packet loss rate. The results of theory model simulation and system measured performance show that this method is feasible, reliable and practical. This system has been used by the Shanghai sailing team. It has won a lot of praises from coaches and athletes. It has a pratical application signification.
