BACKGROUND:CERA (Continuous erythropoietin receptor activator) was a PEG (polyethylene glycol) linked erythropoietin preparation, which was designed for treating anemia. Several cases involving CERA misuse among elite athletes have been reported these years. Efforts of detecting this substance in both urine and blood samples have been made by doping control laboratories. The blood test utilizing a made-for-purpose ELISA kit was currently the most efficient way for detecting CERA, while the original urine test method for non-PEG linked EPO (Erythropoietin) was reported less compatible. With the Bio passport program pursued by World Anti-Doping Agency recent years, an integrated evaluation for all the parameters and variables in both blood and urine specimen post CERA injection could be helpful. OBJECTIVE:Our work presents a comparison of hematology parameters profile between single injection of CERA and a Chinese produced recombinant erythropoietin. METHOD:After pre-experiment of estimated metabolism period which involving2volunteers,4volunteers were subcutaneously injected a single dose of Mircera(?) syringe, while other4were injected Yibiao(?) with a comparable concentration. Urine and blood samples were collected before and post administration. Bio Passport parameters were measured immediately after blood samples were collected, soluble transferrin receptor were measured in serums, while CERA and total erythropoietin concentration were measured in both urines and serums. RESULTS:The concentration of both preparations reached a peak and reduced as expected, and a significant individual difference was revealed in one of the volunteers. Obvious changing tendencies were observed in some of the monitored hematology parameters. Difference between the two preparations was observed. Blood parameters combining with urine IEF profile post CERA injection, the detecting window of CERA could be described specific.
