Hurdling is a speed-and-technique-oriented sport and is the greatest breakthrough in the track and field events in our country since the beginning of the21th century. In recent years, sports fans have witnessed the contributions that the Chinese male hurdlers have made to this sport and the records have not been broken by male hurdlers from other countries, and this fully demonstrates the advancement of the training system in our country and the world-class level skills that the male hurdlers have. As is known to us all, Asian athletes have different even advantageous physical conditions compared with athletes from Europe and America. However, such differences do not stop the Chinese hurdlers from finding out the appropriate methods to train for the sports according to their own heights and speeds and making world-famous achievements. Liu Xiang is very good example among them. In his training, he observes the performances of good athletes and learns from them and at the same time improves his own skills and approaches to perfection. However, the performances of female hurdlers demonstrate a great gap compared with world’s best female hurdlers. Through the videos shot in world-class games, it can be detected that in the fixed hurdles spacing, Chinese female hurdlers obviously fall behind other hurdlers in both speed and pace. The key remains in how the Chinese female hurdlers manage to set their pace and speed within the hurdles in the race. Though they can learn from the male hurdlers, the problem they are facing both physically and technically may be a great obstacle for them to reach the peak.Based on the video which shoots the six female athletes who took part in the6th National Track and Field Grand Prix in2013, and by observing the length of their three strides between two hurdles and the time they take, this thesis summarizes the characteristics of the six athletes’ performances in the race and analyzes the influence such features may exert on their racing speed and pace and points out the space of improvement that the female athletes should make their efforts to by comparing their techniques with world famous female hurdlers. Below are the major findings:1. This thesis points out the main characteristics and regular patterns of Chinese female hurdlers in the100meter hurdles race and offers relatively visual parameters.2. The space between the takeoff spot and the touch down point is not well-arranged and the length of the strides and the pace of running should be readjusted. It takes a longer time for them to run over the space in three steps between two hurdles, which may result from the longer time of each step, longer time of propping up for the next step, slow paces, maladjustment of accelerating their speed and also instability of keeping up a regular pace, which indicates that more attention should be paid to improving the frequency and pace of their strides so that center of gravity of their body can be higher and the frequency of their strides can be higher too.3. It can be observed that some excellent female hurdlers deviate very little from the world’s best female hurdlers and it is important that their excellency should be learned by other female athletes. This thesis gives an analysis on the techniques and paces of Chinese female athletes in the100meter hurdles race and offers corresponding suggestions to improve their skills and can contribute to the study of Chinese female hurdlers in the100meter hurdle race.
