Textual function proposed by Halliday mainly includes thematic structure, information structure and cohesion. In recent years, this theory has been applied to study CET4, reading comprehension and writing test in Senior Middle School. However, there’s little research on discourse-based rational cloze from the perspective of textual function. Discourse-based rational cloze is the new test type item of English in National Matriculation English Test, focused on testing students’ability of discourse comprehension. Meanwhile, it is regarded as the more difficult item by students. Actually, students are requested to master the ability of textual reading comprehension, applying language knowledge and analyzing judgment. Therefore, this paper from the aspect of textual function attempts to analyze discourse-based rational cloze, in order to improve students’discourse analysis competence.This thesis mainly adopts the method of applying theory into practice through the experiment. It first introduces the background and literature review. Then it analyzes theoretical basis. Meanwhile, it also studies the application of textual function to discourse-based rational cloze. Finally, based on the data analysis from experiment, the conclusion is drawn that teachers should consciously lead students to apply knowledge of textual function to analyze how to do well in the discourse-based rational cloze, which can help to improve the students’ discourse competence to complete this test type.After12weeks of observation and study, the results of the study shows that under the guidance of textual function, the students can efficiently improve their solving ability compared with the traditional teaching procedure. After students’ learning textual function, their ability of solving discourse-based rational cloze has greatly enhanced.
