Regarded as one of the cores of communication ability, vocabulary makes the communication go smoothly. Vocabulary teaching, as the main way to get vocabulary, is essential.As the main part in English teaching, vocabulary teaching in senior high schools affects students’ ability to use the vocabulary and it plays a great part in the lifelong vocabulary learning. New English Curriculum Standards of Senior High School requires large vocabulary and students’ knowing of how to use vocabulary. With the development of society, vocabulary teaching emphasize more on the ability to use the words. Howerver, after the carry-out of the New English Curriculum Standards of Senior High School for ten years, there are still some problems in English vocabulary teaching. For example, some teachers’ knowledge and teaching methods need to be updated; at the same time,some students cannot find efficient ways to memorize words. What they can do is to learn the words mechanically, which makes them lose interest in learning vocabulary. There may be some reasons behind this situation, such as the weak foundation of the students’ knowledge and the bad management of the schools,but we tend to find out the problems in the teaching process. My survey involves the following questions:1. What are the teachers’ opinions about vocabulary teaching?2. What are the strategies and methods of vocabulary teaching that the teachersadopt?3. What are the teachers’ puzzles in vocabulary teaching?4. How is the students’ foundation knowledge of vocabulary?5. What are the strategies and methods of vocabulary learning that the students’adopt?6. What are the puzzles and suggestions of students’ learning vocabulary?The survey was conducted in four high schools in Ji Nan. The subjects of this investigation are 62 English teachers and 400 students. In this paper, I combined the English teaching theory with practice, and used questionnaire investigation to get to know the main problems in vocabulary teaching.At the same time, I summarized the main problems of vocabulary teaching, and gave some corresponding improvement advice.According to the research, we can draw a conclusion of the present situation of vocabulary teaching and learning. There are six main aspects:(1)Although the teachers have updated ideas about vocabulary teaching,they pay more attention to vocabulary teaching than to the ability,emotion and humanity.(2)The main teaching methods are out of date, and the use of information technology needs to be emphasized.(3)Teachers are confused about not having efficient ways of teaching.(4) Students have many puzzles in phonetics and meanings of words. Meanwhile, word-formation needs to be strengthened.(5)Students don’t have the suitable ways to learn vocabulary and they need the teachers’ advice.(6)Students are not motivated in memorizing words and they lack perseverance.Some suggestions about problems are given by the author, hoping to improve vocabulary teaching in high schools.As long as teachers and students work together, vocabulary teaching will have a better future.
