This thesis aims to explore the present status of English vocabulary autonomous learning in Hohhot No.3 junior middle school.Autonomous learning is not just implemented by students themselves,but is guided by their teacher as a major method of vocabulary teaching.The school basically has the same vocabulary teaching method throughout every class of each grade.In general,teachers ask students to learn vocabularies by themselves before a text is taught.Therefore,teachers will not spend much time teaching vocabulary which has been autonomously learned by students,but they will just spend a little time checking out how well they've grasped.Vocabulary serves as an indispensable element to develop students' ability to use English.Therefore,it is of great significance to apply vocabulary to practical use.It is stipulated by New English Curriculum Standard that there are more requirements for English vocabulary teaching in junior high school.Under this background,innovations are conducted in Hohhot No.3 Middle School to improve English teaching results,involved with this vocabulary teaching method to stimulate students' learning interest to improve learning effect.However,the method may have problems as well as advantages.The research is an effort to look into this kind of vocabulary teaching method with the instruments of questionnaires and interviews.Two questionnaires are used in this research,with one for Englishteachers and the other for students in junior high school.There are two sections in every questionnaire.The first section is designed to learn about the basic information of respondents,with the body of questionnaire in the other section.In the questionnaires,teachers need to fill in their ideas in vocabulary teaching and autonomous vocabulary learning in junior high school.Regards to the questionnaires for students,the current situation of autonomous vocabulary learning and factors affecting this kind of vocabulary learning are set as questions.The questionnaires are issued to a total of 170 ninth-grade students and 14 seventh,eighth and ninth-grade English teachers.The data collected from the questionnaires are input into the computer and analyzed through SPSS18.0.To make an objective and fact-based analysis,interview is adopted to collect the essential information based on interviewers' oral responses.The same four questions are adopted for 14 teachers and 20 students in this research.The two approaches mentioned above are combined to deal with the following questions:(1)How do students learn vocabulary on their own in detail?(2)How do teachers guide and instruct students to supplement their autonomous learning of vocabulary?(3)What is the attitude of teachers and students to the method of vocabulary teaching mainly depending on autonomous learning?(4)What is the present status of English vocabulary autonomous learning in this school?There are six major findings for this survey.First of all,most of the students have consciousness to autonomously learn vocabulary's sound,form and meaning.However,not all of them are sure that they can grasp these knowledge completely.Secondly,the majority of teachers have understood it's important to teach certain methods and strategies for autonomous vocabulary learning.Thirdly,students and teachers confirm the basic status of autonomous vocabulary learning.Fourthly,autonomous vocabulary learning results in lack of knowledge system to some extent.Fifthly,teachers attach more importance to strengthen learners' capacity of autonomous learning and comprehensive language application than only explain the meanings of words directly.Sixth,autonomous vocabulary learning has helped students gain the ability of autonomous learning which is good for autonomous learning of other subjects as well.This study deals with different methods to improve English vocabulary teaching in junior high school.There are also some limitations in this research due to the limited conditions,insufficient ability,a lack of enough time,and some elements beyond control.Besides,some aspects still need to be explored in the future.
