SNARC effect, as one of the important indicators of the Spatial representation of Number, is an important part of cognitive ability. SNARC(spatial–numerical association of response codes) refers to the ?nding that participants who are doing a binary classi?cation judgment on Arabic digits are typically faster to respond to small numbers with their left hand and to large numbers with their right hand.Over these 20 years, more and more researchers show interest on SNARC effect. However, there is still a huge argue about how this phenomenon happened. More speci?cally, researches on exploring the mechanism and relationship with mathematical ability from the perspective of the development are still inadequate. In view of this, our study aims to explore the SNARC effect and its relationship with mathematical ability from the perspective of development. In Study 1, we chose 120 children from preschool and primary school in grade one, grade three and grade five. Using the comparison task, we wanted to explore the development trend of SNARC effect. The results showed that:(1) the children from preschool(5.2 years)began to show SNARC effect;(2) grade one shows SNARC effect, but the value is marginal significant; Other grades showed SNARC effect and the value was significant;(3) The value of SNARC effect increased with the increase of grade. In Study 2, we explored the relationship between the SNARC effect and mathematical ability. Firstly, in experiment 2A, we analyzed the relationship between the SNARC effect and mathematical test, the results showed that the SNARC effect of grade 1 was not related to the score of academic performance; However, the correlations in grade 3and 5 were very strong.Secondly, in experiment 2B, we went a step further to explore the relationship between the SNARC effect and spatial knowledge of mathematical ability. The results showed that the SNARC effect was strongly related to the score of spatial knowledge in mathematical test.On the basis of these studies, we want to explore the development of the SNARC effect and its relationship with mathematical ability. Our preliminary exploration will provide a basis and guide for the further exploration and for the practice of mathematics education.
