| Although English has been taught in China for decades, the instruction of English has always been exam-oriented. Under this circumference, reading and writing are put at the first place of classroom teaching while listening, especially speaking have been left out. The point of doing this is only because speaking accounts for only so small a part of English examinations that students, school and teachers believe it is not important and can be ignored. This thesis is aimed at putting forward the practical and necessary attitude towards oral English teaching through the study of oral English teaching in a school. It also has the goal of putting oral English to its equal importance as reading, writing and listening. To study the problems of oral English teaching, the writer gained statistics from one school by observing lessons to see how teachers teach oral English and the proportion of the oral English in the whole teaching plan. Besides, the students have been interviewed to collect their learning of oral English. At last, the writer have referred to a number of linguistic theories and teaching practice to suggest the effective oral English lesson ideas in China.Through study, the author has found that the oral English is not the focus of language teaching in this school due to the severe fact that there are more than 50 students in the classroom. Students’ main experiences in speaking English is when they are asked some controlled questions from teachers. The reason behind is that the student number in each class is too large and it is difficult for each of them to speak. However, students should be encouraged to make use of the communicative feature of English to communicate with group members and learn to do things using English when sharing ideas, making decisions together, and other language-oriented activities. Nowadays, English should be regarded as a applied language instead of a language for exam and a language skills instead of language knowledge to develop learners’ communicative competence. Oral English is a key for Chinese to deal with more and more frequent international communication and cooperation. This is the only goal of learning such a global language to spread our thoughts, learn culture of other countries and become a international citizen. |
