The importance of grammar teaching in high school English teaching has been widely acknowledged. However, the traditional grammar teaching mode fails to arouse students’ interest, making it difficult to achieve satisfying teaching effects. Therefore, it’s necessary for English teachers to explore more effective grammar teaching method so as to improve the teaching effects and meet the demands of New English Curriculum Standard. Under this circumstance, this paper carries out both theoretical and practical study on situational teaching method and its application to high school English grammar teaching, aiming to explore whether it is effective to employ situational teaching method in grammar teaching and hence provide some suggestions to improve grammar teaching.This paper first carries out an investigation into current grammar teaching situation. Then it introduces the definitions of grammar and situational teaching method as well as relevant researches on situational language teaching. Next it discusses the theoretical foundation of situational approach. In the following part, this paper explores the employing strategies of situational approach in detail, including the principles and specific methods of creating classroom teaching situation. Based on the existing research results and the author’s own teaching experience, the paper summarizes five principles of creating teaching situation, which are the principle of authenticity, the principle of vividness, the principle of amusement, the principle of openness and the principle of diversity. Besides, the paper also makes a summary of the practical methods of creating teaching situation. And a lot of teaching examples are presented to explain all these principles and methods. In the experimental study, an empirical study which compares grammar teaching effect of situational approach and traditional teaching method are presented. A specific teaching case follows to show how the author applied situational approach to grammar teaching. The results of the empirical study indicate that:(1) Situational approach can increase students’ interest in learning grammar;(2) The employment of situational approach in grammar teaching contributes to improving students’ comprehensive language skills.
