Vocabulary is one of the basic elements of language, which plays an important role in foreign language teaching. At the same time, it is also an important issue which has been plagued by teachers and students. Even though, many scholars and teachers use different methods on vocabulary teaching and empirical researches for a long time, vocabulary learning is still the obstacle for students. In order to change this situation, the author attempts to apply the conceptual metaphor on English vocabulary teaching in the junior high school and tries to use this new method to guide English vocabulary teaching.Lakoff and Johnson published Metaphor We Live By in the 1980 s, they pointed out metaphor was a process of mapping from one conceptual domain to another domain. In recent years, many scholars thought that it’s helpful to use metaphor in foreign language teaching, especially on English vocabulary teaching through a lot of theoretical analyses and experimental investigations. But most of them only stay in theoretical analysis level, seldom applied to foreign language teaching. This study attempts to apply conceptual metaphor to English vocabulary teaching in junior high school and tries to explore a new approach from the perspective of cognition. The author employs conceptual metaphor to English vocabulary teaching with the purposes to find out the effects of conceptual metaphor teaching on students’ vocabulary breadth and depth. In order to test the application of conceptual metaphor to English vocabulary in junior high school, the author makes an empirical study in two parallel classes in grade 7 of XX Junior High School for 4 months. In experimental class, teaching English vocabulary by conceptual metaphor; in control class takes the traditional vocabulary teaching method. Before the experiment, pre-test was given to the students in both experimental class and control class. The results show that the students in these two classes are at the same level on English vocabulary. Then the students are test at the end of this semester to examine the effects of conceptual metaphor teaching on English vocabulary. All the data will be analyzed by SPSS22.0. The results show the mean score in the experimental class is higher than that in the control class. Finally, it can be concluded that conceptual metaphor can guide English vocabulary teaching in Junior High School, that is a kind of effective methods which help students better understand English vocabulary and has great effects on the breadth and depth of English vocabulary.
