In recent years, developing autonomous learning ability and cultivating effective learning strategies have been a hot research topic at home and abroad. In 2007, the ministry of education put forward the necessity of students’ autonomous learning in English teaching mode, the center of toady’s teaching mode is also shifting from teachers’instruction to students’ autonomous learning. The Ministry of Education encouraged students to establish a tailored learning approach that may suit individual development, and at the same time required teaching staff to increase the number of learning strategies that may promote autonomous learning.The aim of the study is to change the current situation of vocabulary teaching in secondary vocational schools by means of autonomous learning theory, vocabulary learning strategy and teaching experiment. By finding out the strategies to cultivate the autonomous learning abilities of English vocabulary in secondary vocational students, changing the traditional vocabulary teaching mode, improving the learning efficiency of English learners and lay the foundation for their lifelong learning and development of students. This study can serve as the theoretical guidance for English teachers in secondary vocational schools to grasp the spiritual essence of the New Curriculum Standards, and meanwhile it can be used as valuable references for the cultivation of autonomous learning abilities among students in secondary vocational schools with the help of autonomous learning theory and vocabulary learning strategies.The author selected 147 students from two parallel classes of Huaibin Vocational School for the teaching experiment. Class (6) Grade One was an experimental class, teaching and autonomous study of vocabulary, while Class (7) Grade one was a control class, taught with conventional vocabulary teaching. Before the experiment, questionnaire survey of the autonomous study of vocabularies and vocabulary knowledge level test were carried out in two classes. During the experiment, the teacher implemented the autonomous study of vocabulary in the experimental class completely for cultivating students learning strategy. After the experiment, questionnaire survey of the autonomous study of vocabularies and vocabulary knowledge level test were carried out again. Students learning habits and changes in vocabulary ability were compared through the two investigations, and the correlation between students learning ability, vocabulary level and academic performance was understood by referring to the results of the final exam. The experimental data showed that the autonomous study of vocabulary can promote the changes of students learning habits and improvement of vocabulary ability, and finally improve the English learning achievement, which promote the teaching of secondary vocational English.
