Autonomous learning is the need of the eras, and it is also the need for lifelong education. As secondary vocational school teachers, it is very important to cultivate the autonomous learning abilities of students in secondary vocational schools. According to cultivate the autonomous learning abilities of them, so that they can use what they learned, lays the first stone for achieving “lifelong learning”. This thesis has some research significance on the improvement of learners’ academic records and the cultivation of autonomous learning abilities. The main research questions of this thesis are:1. How is the cultivation of the autonomous learning ability carried out in English teaching?2. What are the strategies that can cultivate the students’ English autonomous learning abilities?3. What are the teaching effects after the teaching mode of cultivating the English autonomous learning ability?This thesis uses literature review method, questionnaire, experimental method and guided by the theory of libertarian, the theory of cognitive construction, the theory of lifelong education.The following steps were taken in the thesis:first, the author studied the literature on autonomous learning research at home and abroad, and made a questionnaire survey; established the experimental class and control class, and held half period test as the pretest scores; carried out autonomous learning teaching in the experimental class; the teacher helped the students formulate learning goals, autonomous learned textbook contents, tested and tickled learning outcomes, helped them self-monitoring; held the final test at the second term, as the post test scores, used to test the changes of students’ autonomous learning abilities; finally, concluded the results.Through carried out the teaching mode of autonomous learning, students’ grades has improved significantly, promoted the students’ English autonomous learning abilities, because of the individual differences of the students, teachers need to teach students in accordance with their aptitude. There are some limitations in this thesis, such as the research sample is small, the research time is short, has little effect on weak-learns, and the writer’s research ability is limited. Restudy should try to expand the sample, strengthen the effectiveness of the research, the autonomous learning of secondary vocational school English teaching also needs to be enriched and consummated continuously.
