Cooperative learning, as a teaching method, has been applied to teaching practices gradually in many countries since it emerged in the 1970 s in the United States. Cooperative learning has accelerated the reform in education since it was brought into China. The promulgation of National English Curriculum Standards for Junior High Schools(2013) combines cooperative learning with teaching English. It advocates changing conventional teaching English mode and emphasizes the application of teaching English based on cooperative learning.After studying lots of related materials to cooperative learning and teaching English writing in junior high schools, the author chooses students from Grade 8 in Shenbei Junior High School Affiliated to Shenyang Normal University as the experiment subjects. The whole experiment lasts for four months. The author uses questionnaires and test paper to conduct the experiment. The study aims to solve two questions: 1. What are the effects of applying cooperative learning to teaching English writing in junior high schools? 2. What are the changes of students’ attitudes towards English writing after using cooperative learning in junior high schools?According to the experiment, the author finds out that it is effective to apply cooperative learning to teaching English writing in junior high schools. This new teaching English writing strategy not only improves students’ writing abilities in junior high schools, but also makes students feel the happiness of cooperating and achieving group-oriented goals during the process of writing. It increases students’ interests in learning English writing.This study still has some limitations due to the author’s lack of knowledge. During the following research, the author will constantly pay attention to cooperative learning and teaching English writing in junior high schools to remedy these limitations.
