In this thesis, the incidental vocabulary acquisition theory is the main theoretical basis, which is used to analyze how to teach vocabulary through reading. There is a common misunderstanding in vocabulary teaching and learning in rural area of Anhui Province. Teachers teach vocabulary directly from the perspective of pronunciation and Chinese meaning, while students learn vocabulary by rote-learning. And also English teachers and learners have little understanding of incidental vocabulary acquisition theory. Is the incidental vocabulary acquisition theory good for vocabulary teaching and learning in reading? How to apply the incidental vocabulary acquisition theory to improve the efficiency of English teaching and learning? Those are the questions that the writer needs to answer during the research.The situation of English teaching and learning is introduced simply in the introduction part. English learning becomes more and more popular so that English teaching becomes more and more important. The level of English teaching decides the efficiency of learning to some extent so do the teaching and learning methods. First of all, the researcher interviews some teachers and students to know some basic information in order to prepare the questionnaire and classroom observation well. Then through the questionnaire survey and classroom observation results to design the pre-test and experimental tests in order to help teachers and students understand how to imply the incidental vocabulary acquisition theory to vocabulary teaching and learning through reading. Finally students are given a post-test to see their progress in vocabulary learning through reading by using the incidental vocabulary acquisition theory. When the results have been analyzed, the researcher gives some suggestion for English teachers and learners to help them teach and learn English more efficiently. At the end of the thesis, it is introduced that there are still some deficiencies for the thesis and some suggestion for further studies.
