English reading plays an important role in English vocabulary learning.Research on incidental vocabulary acquisition through extensive reading has shown that it can be a major source of vocabulary learning,provided it is a part of a substantial and sustained reading program.Adequate vocabulary and its fluent use are also the guarantee of effective listening,speaking,reading and writing.Therefore what is important is how to apply incidental vocabulary acquisition in extensive reading.The research questions are: Can incidental vocabulary acquisition in English reading increase students' vocabulary? What are the advantages of incidental vocabulary acquisition in English reading? How to apply incidental vocabulary acquisition to English reading in junior middle school?After introducing theoretical bases and describing researches at home and abroad on incidental vocabulary acquisition through English reading,the writer describes in details an experiment that has been conducted in a middle school in Shanghai,with the purpose of applying incidental vocabulary acquisition in the teaching of reading in a junior middle school.The research methodologies are questionnaire,classroom observation and experimental method,the most important being the lesson design,which presents how to apply incidental vocabulary acquisition into junior middle school's English reading in detail.In the experiment the validity of this application is testified.Incidental vocabulary acquisition in English reading has improved students' self-confidence in English vocabulary learning and stimulated their interests in English.The research results show that incidental vocabulary acquisition in English reading has a positive effect on the improvement of students' scores in vocabulary.
