Inquiry-based teaching and learning start by posing questions, problems or scenarios—rather than simply presenting established facts or portraying a smooth path to knowledge. The students learn through reading, observing, experimenting, reflecting and discussing. Compared with traditional teaching, the students are more involved in classroom teaching through inquiring. Inquiry-based teaching emphasizes students’ self-inquiry, which can stimulate students’ learning motivation. Conic curve is not only the content of senior high school mathematics, but also the hot spot and difficulty of the college entrance examination. How to make students learn the conic curve efficiently is a question that teachers should think about. This paper makes a systematic summary of the influencing factors, basic features, process and teaching principles of inquiry teaching, and combines the conic curve with inquiry-based teaching.This paper investigates and understands the current situation of the inquiry-based teaching of conic curve in senior high school,and makes a quantitative analysis of the current situation. This paper from three aspects of students, teachers and school to investigate, randomly selected the students in senior high school in Yantai for the survey, a questionnaire survey. This paper divide inquiry-based teaching into four dimensions: inquiry interest, inquiry habit, inquiry ability and inquiry environment, and investigates from the four dimensions in detail. At the same time, a number of senior high school math teachers and school leaders are conducted a one to one interview, to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the status situation of inquiry-based teaching. The survey found that students have a certain inquiry interest, but explore habits and abilities in general,teachers are not very good for students to provide a good environment for exploration. Through interviews with teachers, we found that there was a sense of fear in the implementation of this teaching method.In the paper, the concept of inquiry-based teaching, methods and other theoretical issues were studied,and the teaching methods and principles were summarized. In the process of implementing inquiry-based teaching, the senior high school teachers should pay attention to improve their theoretical level, and combine theory with practice. In conic curve of inquiry-based teaching process, the teachers should analyze of the teaching content and grasp the teaching system. The senior high school teachers should understand the situation in-depth and do have a definite object in view.Finally, on the basis of theoretical research and investigation and analysis, the paper combines with curriculum standard and the proposition of college entrance examination.The paper apply of inquiry-based teaching method in the teaching of conic curve. The research results are used in instructional design.
