Communication system is an important part of the distribution network automation which shoulders the task of transmitting real-time data to the dispatch center of distribution network, and plays a key role in the composition and function of distribution automation system. Distribution network automation has a variety of choices in communication technologies--optical fiber communication (MSTP/SDH, EPON), power line carrier communications, wireless communications, and so on. Due to the characteristics and requirements of distribution network automation, single communications technology is not feasible in the communication system. The selection of different communications technologies and schematic design has strong influence on the practicability, reliability and effectiveness of communications system, and the cost of its construction, operation and maintenance varies considerably. Many provinces mainly use optical fiber communication with the combination of other technologies which achieves good operation and accumulation of experience. This paper takes distribution network automation of Hangzhou as an example, discusses the important role of optical fiber communication systems in distribution network automation makes theoretical analysis of the factors that may affect the operation of fiber optic cable, and focuses on solutions of building distribution network with EPON technology reasonably. The paper describes in detail constiuction methods of optical fiber communication systems in distribution network automation, discusses the construction cases combined with the actual situation, make collection on-site data collection and status acquisition of some communication loop, and make effective improvement plans according to the theoretical analysis and on-site data which indicates whether the cable work properly.
