After years of competition and development, China’s telecom industry has gradually shiftedfrom the operating system which is network, products and charge-centric, into a customer-centricone. With the emerging impact of mobile resale business, Internet enterprise OTT services, andestablishment of base station companies to telecommunications industry, operators needs to beaware of how to use their strengths to provide customers with one-stop service experience such assingle number, single device, single connect, single bill, an single address book. This will stabilizeand maintain the customers and thus is particularly urgent for operators. Unified Communications(UC) is a service that meets the demands mentioned above. In this essay, firstly the concept and content of the Unified Communications is comprehensivelydemonstrated. Then, the methods and key realizing points are discussed, in which part discusses thepossibilities of realizing UC by IMS infrastructure. Through a comprehensive analysis of IMS,IMS will be designed into the new unified communications services. Under the IMS framework, detailed discussions will be of UC’s various business processes, as well as implementation details. Then, UC implementation scheme will be brought up considering current situation of operators--from the initial building up of unified communications platform, realizing unifiedcommunications functions of fixed network, to increase support for mobile services, and finallyachieving convergence of the fixed network and the mobile network. Thus realizing convergence ofnetworks, single number, roaming, enterprise collaboration, video calls, multi-terminalinteroperability and so on. This implementation can introduce UC with maximum use of existingnetworks, while lower start-up costs. It can also achieve high-speed multimedia services whichbeyond traditional networks’ capability, without affecting the existing business, thus helpingoperators quickly seize user market.Last but not least, the paper addresses the situation of unified communications in Hubei Unicomnetwork, including the results of rapid deployment of IMS and achievement of business integrationof fixed and mobile services. Experiments show that the design method of the basic unifiedcommunications business is feasible. The paper also pointed out a number of issues in operationprocesses of unified communications and gives preliminary solutions.
