IMS-based Fixed/Mobile Convergence

Through years of the development, the telecom industry has migrated into the customer-oriented stage from the network-oriented stage. Thus, what should the carriers do to fulfill the requirements such as one-single number, one-single device, one-single connection, one-single bill, and one-single address book for all the services? Those would be brought out to reality only by the convergence of the networks. Therefore, the convergence between fixed and mobile networks is driven by the requirements of the customers. Furthermore, the optimization of OPEX Management, flexibility of service provision and bundling, are the drivers of network convergence, either.This dissertation gave the planning of network convergence at the beginning. Based on the research dedicated to the status and the trend of the network development, as well as the comparison among several kinds of critical technology for network convergence, including IMS, the author claimed that the IMS is one of the best choices. For the carriers, regardless of facilitating the feature of non-relevance between service and access, independent control from bearer of IMS, the author had conducted to a more important conclusion, that the implementation of single-point sign-in, user behavior collection, which are impossible to deploy by superposing the different networks, can be carried out by the IMS, reducing the costs of service development and operation.Following the beginning, there comes the solution for the innovationto the converged network based on the current networks------from thestage of coexistence of soft-switches and IMS, where the services are controlled independently , to the stage of enhanced control of IMS with more mobile control functions, and to the final stage where IMS take control of a converged network.
