The IC industry has undergone enormous changes in recent years. With the development of manufacturing process, the chip’s speed and integration has rose, causing the problems of functional verification. The verification technology affects chip’s performance, cost and design cycle. It also determines the chip’s ability to survive in the market. Therefore, improving verification technology has become a hotspot in the IC design area.This paper starts from the discussion of verification methods and development process. The classification of functional verification includes formal verification, FPGA-based verification and simulation-based verification. The formal verification uses static method, mainly for small-scale combinational circuit. Although FPGA-based verification can be performed in hardware or software, it has poor signal visibility. Simulation-based verification has become the mainstream of IC verification because of its dynamic features. The approach of functional coverage driven verification can improve the completeness and reliability in IC verification. However, the efficiency of verification depends on the generation of random vectors. Therefore, the paper proposes a genetic algorithm-based technology to improve the efficiency of verification, using the LED decoding chip based on DMX512protocol as the verification object.The mainly aspects of research in this paper are as follows:Firstly, we introduce the design of LED decoding chip, especially the DMX512decoding module. The analysis of data frame and timing constraint in this module is very important to the verification plan.Secondly, there is a brief introduction of genetic algorithm and functional coverage. Then, we analyze the fitness function and three kinds of genetic operators in the genetic algorithm in detail. We finally get the excellent genetic algorithm basing on the proportion of selection operator, uniform crossover operator and binary mutation operator. Thirdly, we build a VMM-based verification platform and embed the genetic algorithm into it using the System Verilog languageFourthly, we use the whole random vectors and genetic algorithm-based vectors to verify the LED decoding chip respectively on the VMM-based verification platform and draw the conclusions accordingly.
