Because of high operating costs and meter reading troublesome issues continue to emerge, the traditional way of reading water meter by troubling each household demonstrates its drawbacks increasingly. Thus automatic meter reading system comes into being. Wireless sensor network has the merit of flexible performances, it has broad application prospects in the many areas. This article introduces the development of he automatic meter reading system at home and abroad and the development history of WSN technology in the first place. With the characteristics of wireless meter reading system, it is put forward that the WSN technology is feasible in it. After the deeply study in current routing protocols of WSN as well as the analysis of the advantages of routing protocols based on clustering algorithm, it points out the importance of the routing algorithm for wireless meter reading system. Apart from that, the article introduces the detailed structure of the meter reading system and its hardware design. The design takes low-power MSP430 and AVR MCU series separately as the main chip. Combined with TI’s low-power radio frequency chip CC1000, a set of hardware circuits suitable for practical application are designed. Furthermore, the software process of electronic meter and wireless node is illustrated in the article, which optimizes the LEACH algorithm and hence ameliorates the function of each node in the whole network. At the end of the design, a test of the various components of the system and the entire network is done. With the analysis of the test results, the existing problems of the system are summarized and the future direction of work is raised.
