With the rapid development of wireless networks today, mobile devices have beenwidespread used. Users of mobile networks become increasingly demanding. However, whenthe mobile device handover in different networks, it will cause short-time disruption, whichwould seriously affects the use of some real-time sensitive applications. Therefore, the currentstudy focus on minimize the delay and packet loss rate of handover. Mobile IPv6(MIPv6) isan improved protocol of Mobile IPv4 and has a better network performance. A variety ofhandover scheme have been developed, such as fast handover proposed in RFC 4068,Hierarchical MIPv6 proposed in RFC 4140. They all reduce the dropout rate and improve thehandover performance. However, these are host-based mobility protocol and require clientfunctionality in the IPv6 Stack of a Mobile Node. MN need to exchange of mobilitymanagement signaling message to home agent which makes it more difficult to designprotocol in client.IETF proposed the Proxy Mobile IPv6 protocol in 2008 to solve IP mobility challenge.PMIPv6 is a network-based mobility management protocol which does not require the mobilenode to be involved in the exchange of signaling messages between itself and the home agent.This article introduces the traditional handover scheme in PMIPv6 domain and proposed anoptimized scheme on the basis of handover delay analysis. This scheme is based on NMAGregistration in advance. Link layer handover is before network layer handover in thetraditional handover scheme. But in this optimized scheme, NMAG did the network layerhandover when MN was still attached to PMAG. Under the rational handover operation andsequence, MN would not be affected during network layer handover. When MN attached toNMAG and finished the link layer handover, NMAG only needs to delete the tunnel toPMAG, modify the router to MN and send the Router Advertisement carrying MN’s HomeNetwork Prefix.Meanwhile, this article sets up a real PMIPv6 experiment test-bed based on open sourceproject OAI PMIPv6. It uses a computer to run the program and utilize a wireless router tosend and receive packages, which implement the function of Local Mobile Anchor andMobile Access Gateway. The experiment result shows that, optimized scheme proposed inthis paper reduces a certain degree of handover delay, compared to traditional handoverscheme.
