With the development of modern information and communication technology, the network information resources are showing a trend of explosive growth, and how to organize and manage these information resources becomes an urgent problem for the library and information institutions. Up to now, there is not a unified Network Information Resources Classification in China, which leads that most commercial websites have to adopt self-classification systems. However, without professional guidance, these self-classification systems aren’t guided by the principle of science. They put too much emphasis on practicality, and ignore the inherent logic of the system between things. Therefore, these self-classification systems existence some problems: unscientific category division and casual category setting and so on. So, it’s very meaningful for us to compare and analyze the network information resources classified system of Chinese comprehensive portal websites. This paper takes Tencent as a typical example of Chinese comprehensive portal websites. This paper contains six parts. In the first part, the paper illustrates the basic flows and main points of network information resources classification at home and abroad. In the second chapter, the paper introduces three specific circumstances about present Tencent, which are web interfaces and basic functions, category structure and category setting, inter class relationship and category name. In the third part, based on the above analysis, the paper compares Tencent with Sina, Chinese Library Classification and Classification and Code of News in Chinese about applicable objects, principles of classification, markup rules and category contrast. In the fourth part, according to these research findings, this paper concludes three optimization measures for Tencent category classification system. First, Tencent should construct clear and friendly web interfaces and be practical and complete in basic functions. Second, it’s important for Tencent to structure a uniform category classification stand and clear inter class relationships. Besides, the category name should be appropriate and scientific. Third, in order to meet users’ demands, it’s better for Tencent to set more explanatory notes. In the fifth part, this paper proposed a new catalog outline for Tencent. And the sixth part makes a summary.
