A Study Of Literature Publishing Of Chung Hwa Book Company:from 1914 To 1949

As the second largest publishing enterprise in the Republic of China,Chung Hwa Book Company has published 668 literature works from 1914 to 1949,including 225 translated works,339 creative works,8 translation creation collection works,and 96 theory works.Whether its publications in the quantity and scale,or in terms of its publications in the quality and effect all can not be overlooked.Chung Hwa Book Company makes a useful contribution for the development of Chinese modern culture and literature.May 4th Movement of 1919 and the Anti-Japanese War broke out in 1937 affected the literature publishing of Chung Hwa Book Company.Influenced by these two big events,literature publishing of Chung Hwa Book Company was divided into three historical periods,exploration period(1914—1918),development period (1919-1937)and recession period (1938-1949).During the exploration period,Classical Chinese Novels which were wrote or translated by old school writers accounted for a large proportion in Chung Hwa Book Company’s translated and creative works.To the development period, new literature works began to appear, the number of foreign famous works which were translated by vernacular also increased in translated works.Affected by the Anti-Japanese War,the number of literature works had fallen sharply,the demand reached a low point in 1942. Japanese literature works no longer appeared in translated works, in contrast, a large number of Anti-Japanese War theme translation and creation appeared.The number of Chung Hwa Book Company’s literature theory works was not much, there were also some years no literature theory books published, but these books had high quality, including many groundbreaking theory of classic.Chung Hwa Book Company’s publishing ideas were presided over by the general manager and editor,so the publishing idea of Lu Bikui and Shu Xincheng greatly affected the Chung Hwa Book Company’s literature books publishing. Lu Bikui claimed that no matter Chinese or western, new or old literature works all can be published.Based on Lu Bikui’s idea,Shu Xincheng payed more attention to the publication of new literature.Thus Chung Hwa Book Company attached great importance to the publication of translated literature books, which had a lot of books called "translation classic", and many of them were groundbreaking translation.At the same time, the classical Chinese fiction creation and translation of old school writers in the exploration period almost thrived.Since Shu Xincheng became Chung Hwa Book Company’s editing director,early literature books publishing depression changed greatly.Under the joint efforts of Shu Xincheng and bookstore colleagues,Chung Hwa Book Company and many new literature writers have established close linkages,such as Tian Han,Xu Zhimo,Li Jieren,Liang Shiqiu,Qian Gechuan and so on. Chung Hwa Book Company not only published many new literature works,but also made a lot of new literature works which had significant impacts in the history of modern Chinese literature widely spread and accepted.
