After the Opium War, China’s closed door is open. The advanced agricultural thoughts ofthe modern Western were introduced to China. Some scholars profoundly understood theimportance of agriculture and developed China’s agriculture through various channels. Theycommitted themselves to the modern transformation of traditional agriculture.Luo Zhen-yu is one of the typical representatives who engaged in the introduction andthe spread of agricultural knowledge for nearly10years. He laid the knowledge base of theagricultural improvement of the late of Qing Dynasty. The continuous introduction of Westernagricultural thoughts, the emergence of agriculture priority ideas and Luo Zhen-yu’s earlyexperiences are the main reasons for his entering the agriculture. Luo Zhen-yu initiated tofound the Agronomic Association, issued Agronomic Journal and published the Series ofAgronomy. He introduced the advanced agronomic knowledge, technique thoughts of Easternand Western countries to China. He set up the East Literary Association and trained manyinterpreters. He had made a positive contribution to exchange of Chinese and Western culture.Meanwhile, Luo Zhen-yu wrote papers to expound his specific propositions of developingChina’s agriculture. The propositions ranged over introducing Western agricultural scienceand technology, reclaiming wasteland to develop agriculture, developing agronomy educationand so on. Duing to poor conditions, Luo Zhen-yu’s agricultural propositions were not carriedout completely. Nevertheless, Luo Zhen-yu had made a positive contribution to the modernChina’s agricultural improvement. He occupied a definite position on the history of China’sagricultural development.
