Nowadays the software development based on open source is an important partof software industry, which has become a special phenomenon. It brings a deepimpact on the evolution of the traditional software industry organizations and bringsthe thought and exploration of patterns and strategies of software industrydevelopment in the field of academia and industry. It means a lot to the research of thedevelopment mechanism and commercial mode of open source software.This thesis circles on the research of the commercial mode of open sourcesoftware. It is based on the industrial organization theory, network theory ineconomics and bilateral market theory. The research methods of game theory,comparative analysis and case study are all used. First, the thesis sums up8kinds ofbasic commercial pattern based on rational suppositions. What s more,3theorymodels of main business model to make profits, namely charging for services,promoted commercial software and Ads and embedded commercial software, hasbeen summed up through the analysis of the case of famous operation system Linux.In the end, based on this model, the law of influences of open source software to thecompetitiveness of software enterprises and the whole industry has been analyzed.1) Based on the analysis of differences between open source software and closedsource software, reasonable assumptions and Economides and Katsamakas of (2005)model optimized are introduced. It is closed to the real economic phenomenon.2) A theoretical model framework is built, which is of open source softwarebusiness operating model. It considers network externalities, software prices, softwaretechnology, product quality, user preferences and user s technical level etc.Severalkey profitable business models are proposed.3) Open source software and closed source software will exist side by side for along time in the market.
