Commodity economy is a historical phenomenon, it has never been innate, nor willlast forever. There are two conditions for its existence: one is the social division oflabor, the other is that means of production and products belong to different owners. With the great development of productive forces, the realization of social ownership andthe ending of classes and nations, commodity economy will disappear completely. Theopinion of eternal commodity economy is wrong. In the view of Marx and Engels, there is no commodity economy in the First Stageof Communism (Lenin’s socialism); on the Contrary, it’s not socialism whencommodity economy still exists. The view of Marx is scientific, because the socialismthat Marx spoke of is of highly developed productivity, and of no classes and nations. As a result, product economy will replace commodity economy. The current saying isuntenable that Marx’s socialism is Utopian, because he did not predict the existence ofcommodity economy in socialist society. The reason for this is that the actual socialismtoday is not Marx’ First Stage of Communism. Therefore, there is no contradictionbetween the actual socialism with commodity economy and the socialism of Marxwithout commodity economy.Another saying that Lenin put forward the thought of Socialist Market Economy inhis New Economic Policy is not tenable either. It’s sure that Lenin advocateddeveloping commodity economy in the period of the New Economic Policy, but at thattime Russia was still in its early circuitous transition to socialism for undevelopedcountries, rather than in the period of socialism. In the Primary Stage of Chinese Socialism today, the development of marketeconomy is not contrary to Marx’s logic, because there are great differences between thepractical socialism and the First Stage of Communism of Marx. Since we’re going toCommunism, commodity economy must be restricted while they are being developed. We must learn how to effectively control the market economy in practice, to ensure thesocialist direction of reform and opening up, avoiding the way towards capitalism.
