Based on DEA model and Malmquist index methods,by taking the contribution rate of totalfactor productivity to define the economic growth pattern, this paper investigates thecharacteristics of the growth pattern of the industrial sector in china during the year of1998to2010.And then making an empirical research on the impact of foreign trade and foreign directinvestment to the growth pattern of the industrial sector both in the national and regional level.The result shows that:Generally, the growth pattern of industrial sector in China presentsobvious extensive feature during the observation period with the trend of deterioration. From theregional perspective, the industrial growth pattern of the east, middle and west area also showsobvious extensive feature. The east and middle area are more serious. This indicates that theindustrial growth in China depend on more and more capital and labor. This growth pattern is in aurgent need to be improved.As the two external factors which has the impact on the industrial growth pattern, foreigntrade and FDI has significant influence on it. In particular, export is a hinder for the improvementof the industrial growth pattern, import promotes the improvement of the industrial growth pattern;FDI has negative effect; FDI has a negative impact on the improvement of the industrial growthpattern. And due to the imbalance of China’s economic development, the impact of the foreigntrade and FDI has significant difference in different area.
