Against the background of reforming and opening, development areas used to be an important industry space to absorb foreign investment and to promote regional development. With the new concepts being put forward like "tri-party cooperation" and "production integration of the city", development areas gradually transform from single industry function to integrated function of economy and society. Under this trend, not only the connotation of development area’s optimizing developing has been enriched, but the complex and important influence of development area’s performance on its surrounding residents in every respects as economic, social, ecology, etc. On the other hand, under the trend of "culture turn" in sociology, researching on place identity began in environmental psychology and became one of the highlights of new culture geography. Place identity, as the result of interaction of individuals or groups with places, describes the willingness or process of person setting the place as a part of self. Research on the place identity of residents is an innovative perspective to evaluate the development area. Therefore, this paper, based on the concept of place identity, researches on the influence of development area’s performance on place identity of residents living around, which can provide theoretical supporting for optimizing social space of development areas.This paper is divided into six chapters:The first chapter is the introduction which mainly introduced the background and significance, the core problem to solve, the research method and technical route. The second chapter mainly reviewed the researches of place identity and performance of development area. The third chapter is the theoretical basis of the paper, which introduces the dynamic mechanism of place identity theory and sets a theoretical foundation of influence hypothesis. The fourth chapter introduces the research methods involved and narrates the basic information of the investigations. By the result that residents’ level of place identity in Changsha development area is much higher than in Minhang, the fifth chapter analysis in detail the influence of development area’s performance on residents’ place identity through overall performance and individual perception performance. The sixth chapter is the conclusion of the paper and some insufficient.This paper has several conclusions as following. Residents’ place identity are significantly influenced by development area’s performance:in aspect of economy, the stable and sustainable growth have remarkable influence on residents; in aspect of society, the justice of policies and social security are important; in aspect of ecology, the idea of sustainable developing and the innovation of community management are conductive to residents’ place identity. Within the influence by individual perception performance of development area, the close relationship between residents and development area is vital basis of place identity, which is obviously embodied in principle of continuity and distinctiveness. Individual income has distinctive effect on the self-esteem aspect of place identity. Abundant commercial services has the most elevating function to residents place identity among all kinds of environmental perception.
