As the inevitable outcome of economic development, the environmental managers in the process of production and business operation at the green economy, undertake the environmental health and safety matters for planning, implementation, supervision, evaluation and perfect management function.This study aims to examine the impacts of different dimensions of environmental manager’s competence on environmental performance as well as firm performance, and as the mediating effect of environmental performance to help us better understand how environmental manager’s competence influences firm performance. Using data from 189 Chinese manufacturing firms, the study tests the research hypotheses. The results indicate that all five dimensions of environmental manager’s competence have positive and significant impact on firm performance. In addition, the relationships between personal trait, specialized knowledge, communication skill, teamwork and firm performance are completely mediated by environmental performance, while the relationship between problem solving and firm performance is partially mediated by environmental performance.In the practice of the enterprise’s daily management, environment management actively for environmental health affairs shall create a good working atmosphere, so as to make the enterprise environmental management more fully display its competence, and to enhance the level of the organizational performance.
