Research On The Restructuring Of Shandong’s Iron And Steel Industry

The iron and steel industry, which is widely applied and highly associated with other industries, is an important basic raw material industry and plays an important role in the economic and social development, national defense, finance, taxation and other areas of all countries around the world. After sixty years of rapid development since the foundation of China, China’s iron and steel industry has made remarkable achievements and the steel output has topped the world since1996. Shandong province is one of the China’s major steel-producing provinces. With a variety of products, a huge industrial scale and a great amount of steel production, Shandong’s iron and steel industry has become one of the pillar industries and plays a pivotal role in Shandong’s industry and even the whole economic development. At the same time, there are still some outstanding problems in the iron and steel industry, such as low industry concentration, unreasonable industrial distribution, backward technical equipment and poor product quality. In view of the scale of Shandong’s iron and steel industry, these problems restrict the overall competitiveness and this industry needs to be improved and upgraded urgently. With the approval of the State Council of China, Shandong has become China’s only steel industry restructuring pilot province by the end of2011. How to seize the golden opportunity to accelerate the transformation and to upgrade the industrial structure, which will lead to a new road toward industrialization to improve the industrial structure, has become an important research topic.This thesis first describes industrial structure and structure optimization theories, and based on a brief introduction of the history and current situation of the iron and steel industry in China, makes an in-depth analysis on the development status of Shandong’s iron and steel industry, the structural features and some outstanding problems.Then, this thesis draws on the research achievements at home and abroad to build an evaluation index system, mainly uses factor analysis method to make the horizontal comparison on the structural conditions of the iron and steel industry in Shandong and other provinces, and analyzes the development of Shandong’s iron and steel industry in China and some related outstanding problems. The results show that the structure of the iron and steel industry of Shandong has achieved a leading position in China, especially in the field of industrial scale, production efficiency, and equipment technology. But in the field of production process, product hierarchy, R&D, etc., the iron and steel industry of Shandong does not have a clear advantage. Its business management and marketing model also need to be further improved; the poor economic benefits and profitability are very prominent.Finally, this thesis makes a detailed description on the experiences and practices of the United States, Japan, Korea and other world powers of the iron and steel industry development, structural adjustment and other aspects, which provides inspiration for Shandong’s structural adjustment of the iron and steel industry. Combined with reality of the iron and steel industry in Shandong, several industrial structure adjustment recommendations were made.
