Regional technical innovation is the impetus for regional economic development. With the deepening of economic globalization, more and more innovative activities showed significant spatial effects, and innovation spillovers show a gradual strengthening trend. Innovation spillovers for narrowing the level of economic development of the backward areas and advanced regions has important practical significance. Therefore, based on the theory of economics on the existing space, this paper study on spatial spillovers of city innovation in Yangtze River Delta for other regional economic development to provide reference.First, this paper builds a more systematic theoretical framework of urban innovation Spillovers, and combed the mechanism of urban innovation spillovers with four points of city’s innovative premise, essence, channel and impact. Second, it introduces the tradition measurement methods of innovation spillovers and describes the spatial econometric methods in three areas of spatial correlation test, spatial models and space right weight matrix. Third, it constructs three kinds of spatial weight matrix and analyzes the effect of innovation spatial spillovers and convergence according to Exploratory spatial analysis, spatial econometric models and spatial convergence model. Results show that:(1) Since2004, the patents of Yangtze River Delta city has significantly improved both on number and structure, and the agglomeration effect is existed in the geographical space. Innovative activity is highly concentrated in Shanghai, Suzhou, and Ningbo; the global autocorrelation test showed a positive spatial correlation, and local auto-correlation test showed that part of the city deviated from this positive correlation.(2) Through the empirical analysis,we found that obvious innovation spatial spillovers has been formed between cities. The funds and personnel input have positive influence on innovation output. Foreign direct investment produces negative effect to innovation. The promotion of industry specialization and diversification to innovation are not significant; urban population concentration on innovation spillover effect is significantly positive.(3)The convergence analysis of innovation discovered that Innovation of cities in Yangtze River Delta shows week convergence δ and absolute/conditional convergence β significant spatial spillover effect makes the level of the Yangtze River Delta innovative convergence. Innovation of this paper is to city group as the research object, and study of the internal mechanism of urban innovation spillovers in depth; it builds spatial weight matrix by three different angles of space adjacent, geographic distance and economy to analysis the effect of innovation spatial spillovers and convergence. The characteristics of knowledge, however, had a great influence on innovation spillover, and no explicit and tacit knowledge segment will produce certain effect, so it needs to be further enhanced. At the same time, the diversification of spatial weight matrix also needs to be improved.
