Accompanying the deepening of the globalization of the world’s economy,financial communications between counties have grown significantly. Internationalenterprises and investments are even more witnessed. These caused new requirementsfor the direction of development of commercial banks. On one hand, traditional assetsbusiness and liability business of Chinese commercials banks are severely affected sincethe Subprime Crisis of the United Sates. On the other hand, the dictating position ofChinese commercial banks’ assets and liability business are threatened by the followingfactors: the rapid development of internet finance in the year of2014, the acceleratingof the liberalization of interest rates and the participation of private-owned commercialbanks in the competition. Moreover, the gear-switching period of the China’s economicgrowth, the reforming period of the economic structure adjustment and the digestingperiod of the previous stimulus policies, which are known as the “three periods”, alsocontribute to additional pressure.It is necessary for Chinese commercial banks to changetheir previous profit model that replies predominately on interest rate differential ofdeposits and loans. Commercial banks have to adjust the income structure, broadenincome channels to break the deadlock of the homogenous competition, cultivatespecialized business models, seek for new profit growth sources. Based on successfulexperiences of many foreign commercial banks, developing and paying more attentionto intermediary business has become an effective and feasible responding measure.Relying on the following advantages: variety of production categories, no capitaloccupying required from the bank, high-return and low-risk, the intermediary businessof Chinese commercials banks are experiencing fast development, enlarging scale andincreasing weight in revenue. However, the rationality of the structure of theintermediary business and its influence to business performance should draw moreattention.Therefore, in this article, basic concepts of intermediary business ofcommercial banks and analysis in reality on intermediary business and performanceevaluation in Chinese commercial banks are first introduced. Second, taking listedChinese commercial banks as objects of study, data of intermediary business incomestructure and net asset return rate from2006to2013based on annual report arecollected. In statics analysis, vertical and horizontal analysis are conducted from twodimensions: the trend of profit of each type of intermediary business versus time and the intermediary business income structure of each listed commercial banks of China. Inempirical analysis, based on panel data, econometric model of intermediary businessincome structure and the business performance are established to analyze therelationship in between. In the end, feasible suggestions are proposed from both macroand micro perspectives according to current situations.In conclusion, for large-scalecommercial banks consulting business, the secured promises business and trust andfiduciary business have highly significant influence over the business performance,whilst for mid and small-scale commercial banks, the influence of consulting businessand trust and fiduciary business are significant.Many studies have been conducted previously about intermediary business.However, the income structure of intermediary business and rarely mentioned. In thisstudy, intermediary business has been categorized into6sub-businesses, the bank cardbusiness, agency business, trust and fiduciary business, clearing and settlement business,the secured promises business and consulting business to investigate the intermediarybusiness income structure. Moreover, considering the wide range of status of theintermediary business of Chinese commercial banks in terms of scale, growth rate andcapital states, banks are categorized into large-scale commercial banks and mid andsmall-scale commercial banks in order to conduct statistical research and empiricalresearch individually.
