Since the reform and opening up in China, one factor that affects the national economic development is the consumption demand of residents. However, at present, China’s consumer market situation is not ideal. The rural residents’ consumption level in a whole is generally low and polarization phenomena of the consumer market are more and more serious. From various aspects, therefore, farmers should be encouraged to have reasonable consumption. Besides, the rural consumption structure must be also further perfected, and the occurrence of the polarization of rural consumption market should be avoided. In this paper, the research object is the consumption behavior of rural residents in China. The study firstly examines the overall situation of rural resident’s consumption, including the two aspects of the consumption structure and consumption level. Based on the previous conclusions, the overall trend for China’s rural residents’ consumption level is analyzed from the relationship between consumption and income per capita, per capita average propensity to consume, the growth rate of rural residents’ consumption expenditure, and the relationship between the growth rate of GDP, etc. The study also focuses on rural residents’ consumption from the present situation of farmers’ consumption, characteristics and regularity of changes and trends of its changes. Then, the current situation, change characteristics and change trends are further analyzed in aspects of the proportion of consumption and trend phase change characteristics of the eight goods from rural residents’ consumption structure. Furthermore, combined with the time series data of urban and rural residents’ consumption structure in 2000-2012, the empirical study is expected to be made on Chinese rural residents’ consumption behavior characteristics and trends buy using the extended linear expenditure system(ELES) model. The thorough analysis and summary will be carried on Chinese rural residents’ consumption behavior by investigating the present situation of our rural residents’ consumption behavior and evolution trend and with the combination of qualitative and quantitative method. For further study of the evolution of internal consumption of rural residents, this paper is divided into three groups, rural residents, rural into urban temporary(urbanized) residents and urban residents. Based on China’s household income survey(CHIP) data given by the national bureau of statistics ChengDiao team and the Chinese academy of social sciences institute for economic development in 2002 and 2007, a comparative study is conducted on the polarization characteristics of the rural residents’ consumption behavior, so as to explore the change trends of the internal consumption behavior of rural residents, and further to investigate the polarization of residents’ consumption from low to high. The three groups of residents’ consumption level is ordered from low to high and they are divided into 20 groups in average. The internal wolfson index of each group is calculated, and then the polarized characteristics of the consumption distribution between different consumer groups are observed in order to put forward suggestions and policies about how to further improve the rural residents’ consumption behavior. From the perspective of macro study, the farmers’ consumption level is overall raised with the increasing income, but the growth rate of consumer spending lags behind the economic growth. At the same time, the consumption structure is in constant updates, from the necessity type to developing and enjoying type, from labor type to spiritual type. From microscopic angle, laterally speaking, the consumption polarization of urbanized residents is smaller than that of urban residents and bigger than that of rural residents. Vertically speaking, the consumption polarization of rural residents and urban residents is aggravated, respectively gathering to the high consumption crowd and the low consumption crowd, while the life quality of urbanized residents is not optimistic because they haven’t truly fit into the urban life. In addition, the polarization between the highest consumption crowds and lowest ones is most intensified.
