In recent years crisis especially food safety crisis events happened frequently. so it is of great theoretical and practical significance to study the impact of the crisis and enterprise crisis response measures. There exist the routes of crisis and crisis coping behavior in the existing enterprise crisis literature. Most literature belongs to the former, and there are only a few crisis coping behavior papers. Even in the few literatures of crisis coping behavior, most researchers look at the effect of defense from isolated enterprise perspective, but in fact, from the existing enterprise defensive practices we can see that many crisis events can not only defend themselves, but also clarify the problem of the whole industry. In this paper, we introduce the construct "Institutional defensive work" from one AMJ paper and test its validity. We use the samples of Chinese medicine and food crisis from 2008 to study the effects of enterprise defensive announcements industry after the crisis, as well as the effects of the reputationas a situational factor. In order to test the industrial effect of institutional defense work, this paper uses regression to verify the effect of one enterprise’ IDW(institutional defensive work) as well as the defense of other companies in the industry on the above enterprise, considering the important role of corporation reputation as a situational variable. Through the research of this paper we can find the following conclusion:at least in the food and drug safety crisis the IDW of oneself is of negative effect to the enterprise, but have a positive effect on other enterprises, and reputation’s moderating effects are not significant. The full paper is divided into six chapters. The first introduces the construct of defense, points out the background and significance of the study; the second chapter reviews the relevant literature in the field of crisis, to find a theoretical foundation for the research of IDW; the third chapter puts forward the hypotheses; the fourth chapter defines how to measure the variables; the fifth chapter empirically analyses the institutional defense’s individual-negative effect and industry-positive effect; the sixth part summarizes the whole paper, putting that forward the system of defense concept is worthy of further research.
