Research On The Impact Of The Import Of Intermediate Products On The Export Sophistication Of Chinese High Technology Products

Since the reform and opening up, with the continuous improvement of our country industrial technology level and the trade structure is constantly upgrading, the proportion of high-tech products is increasing. At the same time, with the continuous specification of the "international specialization" model, the productive process will be split into different procedures and it will be spread into different countries and regions for professional production. The high-tech products will be no exception. The high-tech products exports of China is mainly dominated by the mode of processing trade, which means, China imports many intermediates of high technology density and high integration, such as components and parts.Then, making use of China’s labor force advantage, all intermediates will be sold around the world after processing and assembling. The great deal of import of high-tech intermediates will definitely promote the import of the final products. However, it still needs to be discussed whether advanced technologies hidden in intermediates could be responsible for boosts of exports "quality" of high-tech products and give rise to the spillover effect. The concept of export sophistication provides a favorable analysis tool for its studies.This paper analyzes the influence of intermediate product import on the export sophistication of high tech products by the combination of theory and empirical analysis.This paper consists of five chapters,the first chapter is the introduction, which reviews the relevant literatures about the trade of intermediate products and the complexity of export technology.The second chapter mainly studies the influence mechanism and transmission mechanism of the import of intermediate products on the technical complexity of the export.In the third chapter, calculated the export sophistication industries agglomeration of five subdivided trade structure of China’s high-tech technology according to the Hausman, Jason & Rodrik(2006) PRODY index, and compares it with the sample countries.In the fourth chapter, on the basis of introducing FDI, R&D, human capital three control variables, this paper uses panel data model to test the relationship between the import of intermediate products with the export sophistication of high-tech products. The measurement results show that the influence of the import of intermediate products on the export sophistication of high-tech products has industry heterogeneity, the import of intermediate products of medicine, electronic and communication equipment, medical equipment and instruments have a role in promoting its export sophistication,However, the import of intermediate products of the aerospace and electronic computer and office communication equipment will play an inhibitory role in the improvement of the export sophistication.In the fifth chapter, we put forward the policy suggestions to promote the export sophistication of high technology products. The first is to moderate expansion of imports of intermediate products and optimize the structure of imports.The second is to increase R&D investment and enhance the ability of independent innovation.The third is to strengthen the construction of high- tech talents team. The fourth is to introduce FDI actively and improve the level of foreign investment.
