Nowadays, metamaterials have become hot spot in research field whatever at home or abroad. The subwavelength periodic structures designed by artificial occur many peculiar electromagnetic properties which make the metamaterial has a remarkable application prospect. Terahertz is the electromagnetic wave whose wavelength is between micro wave and infrared, and its frequency range is from 0.03 mm to 3mm. However, the research results of the terahertz wave band are very few, mainly due to the limitation of terahertz wave generation and terahertz wave band detection equipment. Nowadays, with the development of the micro fabrication technology, the micron even nanometer size of the micro structure can be produced, and more and more artificial electromagnetic materials are applicated in terahertz.Artificial electromagnetic materials have great application prospects in the fields of electronics, physics, chemistry, biology and medicine due to their unique properties of terahertz. This paper combines with the advantages of terahertz and making the research of the new artificial electromagnetic material. The main contents of this paper are:1) Making the research for the current development and application of metamaterials at domestic and abroad. Elaborating the principle and application of three metamaterials including split ring resonators(SRR) are introduced in this paper, frequency selective surface(FSS), surface plasmon polariton(SPP).2) The reseach status and application of the metamaterials in terahertz region. Proposing the theories of achieving the negative effective permeability and negative permittivity, the numerical analysis method of the structure design and parameter inversion algorithm. And we build the structure based on these theories. We analysis the electromagnetic properties of the metamaterials based on the result of simulation.3) Design and preparation of terahertz artificial electromagnetic materials. Designing and fabricating artificial electromagnetic materials which resonate in terahertz. This paper introduces preparation technology such as magnetron sputtering, electroplating, wet etching, dry etching, lithography, lift off and etc.4) We have designed several different kinds of electromagnetic wave absorbers based on the principle of electromagnetic wave absorption. First is the frequency selective surface which is made of metal plate slot structure. And we have simulated the absorption characteristics of absorber in the TE and TM model. The second is using flexible material as substrate, using split ring resonator structure resonance to absorb electromagnetic wave. The Third absorber is composed of high dielectric constant materials.
