China is rich in mineral resources. Coal mining brings great economical benefits; it also inevitably affects the mining and its surrounding environment. Then vegetation plays a significant role in ecological environment system in mine areas, whose growth and development is an important indicator for ecosystem. Since environmental degradation in mine areas, vegetation is closely related with the surrounding ecological environment. Remote sensing images can effectively detect the changes of vegetation in real-time, and provide basic data and technical support for mining environmental management and disaster prevention. In this paper, we extract information about the surrounding vegetation in time series of Landsat-7 ETM image data with remote sensing techniques, and calculate NDVI images and vegetation coverage in 2000,2004,2007,2010 based on vegetation index and vegetation cover theory at dimidiate pixel model, meanwhile, make thematic maps of vegetation coverage changes with ArcGIS in ten years to get the vegetation coverage status through statistical analysis. Experimental results show that the vegetation cover area has increased rapidly within 10km around the entire mine areas in this decade, so is the surface vegetation coverage. According to calculation results, vegetation for slope protection technology, and combined with the real situation in Haizhou opencast, developing rational vegetation for slope program to achieve a static slope to prevent instability and restore ecosystem.
