At present, the competition in domestic steel market is becoming much fiercer, and products homogenization is serious. Manufacturers and customers are paying more attention to the quality of steel products' surface. And with the development of steel industry, the hot rolling skill will gradually take the place of cold rolling. So the requirements for the surface condition of hot rolling plate are also improving.Nowadays, Ansteel has applied four hot-rolling production lines, the production capacity has been greatly improved. However, part of the surface of strip steel still exists iron oxide. This kind of quality defect makes the surface rough, and even leads to the emergence of steel pit. It has seriously impact on the quality of products and the mechanical properties of strip steel. Therefore, it is urgent to analyze the principle of the appearance of iron oxide, find out the causes such as the pressed in scale, and take effective measures to improve the strip surface quality. This paper states the definition of iron oxide, causes of related defects, the influencing factors, the nature, species and compositions. Through the experiment of electron microscope photos, analyze surface morphology and cross section structure of iron oxide. According to current situation in Ansteel 1580 hot rolling strip steel scales, study the rolled-in scale, pitting scale, red iron oxide and painted face. They put forward measure to reduce the quality defects of iron oxide, improve process equipment, standardize operation and control the generation of iron oxide. As a result, the surface quality of hot rolled strip is greatly improved, while it enhances the market competitiveness of Anshan Iron and Steel Company.
