Polystyrene is widely used resin material, but it has big harm during use because of its inflammable performance. Though the traditional flame retardant has played a very good effect, a lot of harmful substances has been released at the same time. In order to reduce the generation of toxic gases without reducing flame retardant effect, we add other materials to improve the flame retardants formula, which all based on the conventional flame retardants.We reduce the amount of flame retardants which contain bromine by replaying with others. We get the usage of traditional flame retardants through experiment when the LOI achieved 30%.We use CPE to replace HBCD and get the biggest usage of CPE. We use zinc borate to replaced antimony trioxide and get the biggest usage of zinc borate. We find the best proportion of CPE and HBCD, the best proportion of zinc borate and antimony trioxide. We get a new sort of flame retardants which has less bromine and lower product cost by mixing up the four sorts of flame retardants. We can get the ideal effect with a small usage. The production of smoke and CO has a clear decline when Polystyrene burns. We discuss the new system of flame retardants when we improve the traditional flame retardants.We use BPS to replay HBCD to discuss the new flame retardants because we think that the traditional flame retardants bring a bad effect to the mechanical properties. The BPS has little effect on the mechanical properties because the compatibility of BPS and PS is better. We get the system of flame retardants of which the effect can meet our requirements by mixing up zinc borate and antimony trioxide to the BPS. We think that the BPS has a better compatibility with the polystyrene which make the flame-retardant polystyrene has better mechanical properties.We make two flame-retardant polystyrene samples which were separately made by different flame retardants. The flame retardants have the best flame retardancy in the two systems of flame retardant. We compare the mechanical and retain insulating properties through the test result. We can get that the flame-retardant polystyrene which made by BPS has a worse mechanical property with a better thermal insulation performance.
