At the end of the last century, halogen flame retardant is widely used in polymer flame retardant because of its advantages of high efficiency and low price. However, it releases toxic gases which can pollute the environment and harm the human health when burned. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop halogen-free flame retardant. For this kind of situation, this paper has carried out the following work in the flame retardant polypropylene(PP) research:preparation of organic modified montmorillonite (OMMT); PP was melt-blended with OMMT, aluminum hydroxide (ATH), magnesium hydroxide (MH), polypropylene (PP), maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MA-g-PP) and study its performance; PP was melt-blended with OMMT, intumescent flame retardant(IFR), zinc borate (ZB) and study its performance.(1) Using cationic quaternary ammonium salt hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) modified montmorillonite. Optimized the reaction time, reaction temperature, dosage of CTAB, pH, and the exchange rate is as high as 78%. By using TGA, X-ray diffraction and IR, the results show that CTAB has inserted into the MMT layers.(2) In the OMMT/ATH/MH/PP composites, the ratio of ATH/MH and the amount of OMMT?MA-g-PP make a difference to the materials. By using the vertical flame test, oxygen index test, TGA and SEM analysis, the results showed that the materials prepared under the optimal conditions has a nice flame retardant properties, the LOI is 28.2%.(3) In the OMMT/IFR/PP composites, the ratio of PER/APP/Mel and the amount of OMMT?ZB make a difference to the materials. By using the vertical flame test, oxygen index test, TGA and SEM analysis, the results showed that the materials prepared under the optimal conditions has a nice flame retardant properties, the LOI is 30.2%.
