As a huge manufacture country, manufacturing in China consume considerable electric energy every year. Machine tools are the major power consumption equipment in manufacturing industry. Most equipment have the problems that are big energy waste and low energy utilization ratio. The energy conservation and emission reduction of machine tool has great significance for the sustainable development of manufacturing industry. The energy consumed in machining can be divided into two parts: cutting energy consumption, supplementary energy consumption. Cutting energy is consumed to remove the workpiece material. In the total energy consumption, cutting energy is the available energy. At present, the research objects of the cutting energy consumption model are the turning and milling which cut workpiece Stably and be used to machining cylindrical and plane. However, the existing model of cutting energy consumption are not suitable for the thread whirling which have complex machining characteristics, such as the machining features of the spiral groove, time varying characteristic and interrupted cutting, because of the different cutting parameters, the different movement law of tool and workpiece. This paper proposed an evaluation method of specific cutting energy consumption based on instantaneous variation cutting force in whirlwind milling for lead screw. The main work is as follows:Firstly, based on the analysis of the geometric characteristics of tooth profile of double arc cutting edge and the movement law of tool-workpiece, this paper analyze the instantaneous variation characteristics about the cross sectional area of undeformed chip and the length of location cutting edge. Then this paper model the instantaneous variation cutting force of the thread whirling under the considering about the previous influence of cutting to the next cutting force.Secondly, based on the analysis of the cutting energy characteristic and the model of the instantaneous variation cutting force, this paper establish the model of the cutting energy consumption. Then, establish volume equation of the undeformed chip based on the movement law of tool-workpiece. On this basis, model the specific cutting energy consumption.Finally, on this basis, use the value of cutting force that was simulate by DEFORM-3D for fitting the cutting constants and verify the reliability of the cutting force model. Then, based on the model of specific cutting energy consumption, analyze the influencing characteristic of cutting parameters, such as the cutterhead rotation speed, workpiece rotation speed, the number of the cutter tooth and the gyration radius of the tool nose, on the specific cutting energy consumption.
