Since the advent of polyurethane leather (PU leather), they are used in our life widely due to their excellent properties. However, the PU leather is very flammable, which threatens people's life and the property security seriously. In this study, three kinds of DOPO derivatives flame retardants were synthesized with DOPO,1,4-Butanediol diglycidyl ether, epichlorohydrin, formaldehyde and diethanolamine as raw materials. Their chemical structure and thermal stability were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). Using them as a monomer, to participate in the synthetic reaction of the inherent flame retardant PU leather. The flame retardance and smoke suppression of the flame-retardant PU leather was studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical-horizontal burning test (UL-94) and cone calorimeter test (CCT). The flame retardant mechanism of flame retardants in flame-retardant PU leather substrate was investigated by thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The different structure of flame retardant effect on the mechanical properties of flame-retardant PU leather was tested by universal testing machine. The main contents of this study are given as follows:1.Compared with DOPO, BDEDOPO has better suitability and compatibility in PU leather substrate. Compare to the pure PU, PU/BDEDOPO-1.0% obtain excellent flame retardance. But the performance of smoke suppression and mechanical performance is bad:the total smoke production (TSP) increased by 97.44%, the tensile strength was reduced by 38.91%.2.Compared with DOPO and DHDOPO, ECDOPO has the best suitability and compatibility in PU leather substrate. Although the PU/ECDOPO-1.0% of obtain the better flame retardant, smoke suppression and mechanical properties. But compare with the pure PU, the total smoke production (TSP) is still increased by 22.59%, the tensile strength decreased by 10.90%.3. ECDOPO in combination with fumed silica (SiO2) were used for preparation of flame-retardant PU leather. In maintaining its excellent flame retardant performance in advance, PU with 12.2wt% ECDOPO and 3 wt% SiO2 has excellent mechanical properties and smoke suppression performance.Compared with pure PU, it decreased its total smoke production (TSP) by 19.78% and increased its tensile strength by 21.29%. This research will provide a valuable reference for synthesizing flame retardant polyurethane leather materials.
