A Research On Eugene Hargrove's Environmental Philosophy

After the rapid economic development as well as the various environmental problems,China is entering a new era of ecological awakening and comprehensively promoting the construction of ecological civilization.The wisdom of environmental philosophy is needed at the time of constructing of ecological civilization for seeking the effective way to solve the environmental crisis.Eugene C.Hargrove,as the chair of the Center for Environmental Philosophy(CEP),has abundant meaning of his environmental philosophy.Systematically and comprehensively studying on Hargrove's environmental thoughts is helpful to enrich the research content of environmental philosophy,and it would be used as a reference for the development of environmental philosophy in China.By deeply reading the classical works of Hargrove,and seeking the realisticand academic background of Hargrove's thoughts,the theoretical resources of the thoughts had been discovered,which including the ancient Greek beauty is good ethics thought,Whitehead's intrinsic value theory and Wittgenstein's aesthetic thought.According to the chronological order,the text reviews the main contents of Hargrove's environmental philosophy,including four parts: the earth ethics,the natural values,the natural aesthetics and the ecological education.Moreover,this paper attempts to explore the theoretical characteristics of Hargrove's environmental philosophy.The main features are concluded as the weak anthropocentrism standpoint,emphasizing aesthetic empiricism bias,natural aesthetics tendency and adhere to scientific and technological optimism,etc.Finally,a brief evaluation of Hargrove's thoughts by drawing on the positive elements of his thinking has been taken.In order to help China's construction of ecological civilization.
