Excellent physical mechanical properties of engineering ceram ics,such as high hardness,high wear and corrosion resistance,co ntribute to successful application in the cutting tool,refractory material,auto parts and other fields.This has lim ited more extensive usage because of their hard m achinability at the s ame time.Ultrasonic vibration assisted grinding(UAG)improves hard m achinability of ceramics,increases efficiency and enhances workpieces surface/subsurface quality to some extent.With the development of technology constantly,not only the high standards for surface/subsurface quality have been raised,but also the s trict requirements for edge quality have been dem anded.As a result,this paper study em phatically on the edge damage mechanism of ultrasonic vibrant as sisted grinding for engineering ceramics processing.This article discussed edge damage of Al2O3?ZTA and ZrO2 ceramics using three methods such as basic theories,finite elem ent analysis(FEA)and grinding experim ent in order to establish prediction model of edge damage.Firstly basing on estimating fracture toughness theory and grinding force formulas build the edge damage forecasting model.Found that the grinding parameters,material properties and ultrasonic param eters have effects on edge dam age for engineering ceramics and fracture toughness of ceram ics has higher sensitive im pacts on edge damage.Then using ABAQUS software establis hed three-dimension cutting m odel of single-grit.Found that edge da mage of UAG and CG consists with results of practical grinding which is sim ilar to grinding force.In the case of s imulation impact trend of grinding parameters,material properties and ultrasonic parameters for edge damage are similar to this in the condition of forecasting model.Lastly relation curve b etween parameter factor and depth value of edge dam age through grinding experiments was gained,which verified the effectiveness of FEA and forecasting model.Found that grinding force trend of FEA and forecasting model is the same as experimental results and edge damage value of forecasting model consists with experimental results.What is th e smaller deviation between forecasting values and experimental results by fracture toughness method rather than by grinding force method of UAG.
