Engineering ceramic materials own some excellent properties, such as high hardness and strength, high corrosion-resistant, wear-resistant, thermostable ability and excellent chemical stability etc, so it is applied widespread in electron, machinery, metallurgy, aerospace, chemistry, military and precise manufacture field. Grinding is the main method of the ceramic machining. The quality of the ceramic surface produced during grinding seriously influences the performance of workpiece. Maintaining the grinding force in constant during the grinding process can greatly reduce the ceramic workpiece's surface roughness. Therefore, reasearching an effective method to control the grinding force, which has very important theoretical and practical significance.The paper introduces an engineering ceramic grinding equipment designed by the author and also does research on the grinding force and the methods to control the grinding force.There are many grinding factors that affect the grinding force. The experimental results show that when measuring the grinding force in the tangential direction of wheel rotation the grinding force in reverse grinding is bigger than that in forward grinding and the surface roughness is better; the grinding force increases with the increase of depth of cut and workpiece feed speed; the grinding force decreases with the increase of rotation speed of wheel and the grain size; But the workpiece's surface roughness is worse as the increases of the grain size. Grinding with the grinding fluid can reduce the grinding force and improve workpiece's surface quality.In this paper two kinds of control system are built, they are fuzzy control system and adaptive fuzzy control system. The experiment results show that the fuzzy control can effectively control the grinding force but the grinding force is overshoot during the grinding process. The adaptive fuzzy control system can reduce the overshoot of the grinding force and its control effect is better. So the paper chooses the adaptive fuzzy control method to control the grinding force in the engineering ceramic grinding equipment. After that the grinding force is controlled very well and the overshoot is significantly reduced.
